The City has been receiving complaints regarding fish kills within our lakes and canals.
It turns out that this event is occurring throughout South Florida.
As alarming as this sight is to some people, these deaths are caused by natural phenomenon.
The recent prolonged cold weather event caused two things to happen in our waterways.
First, the cold weather drastically lowered water temperatures causing non-native fish that
found their way here from South America, Africa and Southeast Asia by way of the pet trade
to die off in large numbers. Secondly, the cold weather also triggered a condition where
the top layer of water cools and becomes denser than the oxygen poor bottom water and actually
sinks forcing the oxygen poor water to the surface leading to the death of many fish both native
and exotic. The decomposing fish produce a noxious odor in areas surrounding the waterways.
Depending upon location a waterway can be maintained either by homeowner’s associations, the
City or the County. The City and County are working on removing these fish from the waters
that we maintain. This task is a large undertaking and we are doing our best to remove them
in a timely manner.
