Utilities & Engineering Director

The Utilities and Engineering Department handles those things that most of us take for granted every day. The water that comes out of your faucet, the viability of your sewage systems, and the streets, lanes, boulevards, and sidewalks that you travel on are all things for which these divisions are responsible for.

The Utilities and Engineering Department strives to provide these services at a minimum cost to taxpayers and in a manner that is responsive to citizen's needs.

Public Work’s mission is to preserve and protect City properties in an effort to maintain a meaningful quality of life for all who live, work and play in Coconut Creek. This department consists of a team of dedicated individuals who work diligently maintaining City buildings and grounds, park and recreation facilities, landscaped roadways, and providing logistical support for all City events. Enhancing and maintaining the beauty of this City is our number one priority.

Facility Maintenance

Each and every building and structural amenity in the City is the responsibility of the Facility Maintenance Team. They perform or oversee all aspects of maintenance, repair, renovation, and construction of City facilities, including planning, design and construction supervision for over 226,543 square feet of buildings. This team exhibits skills in carpentry, electrical wiring and lighting, mechanical systems diagnosis, floor and wall covering, and painting. The Facility Maintenance Team also provides support to other operating departments within the City, handling interdepartmental work requests through a computerized work management system.

This team is also a leader in "Green" initiatives, which include energy saving lighting retrofits, the use of reflective roof coatings, the use of certified green cleaning products, solar lighting at City entrance signs and bus stops, and participation in FPL energy reduction programs.

Parks and Grounds Maintenance

The City takes great pride in the beauty of landscaped grounds, park and recreation facilities, and roadways. The special effort of maintaining these areas is managed by the Parks and Natural Resources Team. They are responsible for performing or overseeing all aspects of landscape maintenance including planning and design, installation, tree pruning, irrigation, fertilization, and pest management for 245.5 acres of parks, natural areas and City facilities. Members of the team take particular pride in the development of “Butterfly Gardens” located at various parks and City facilities. Technology is no stranger to the Parks and Grounds maintenance effort as the City relies on a computerized central irrigation control system to manage most of the City’s larger irrigation systems. It provides information such as how much water is used; when a system fails and where the problem is located; remote setting of start and stop times; and real time reporting of local weather conditions. This is especially helpful in maintaining 9 miles of irrigated roadway medians.

Athletic Field Maintenance

The City has been recognized throughout South Florida for its quality athletic fields. Athletic field maintenance is a very specialized effort necessary to ensure the safety of all the athletes who use our facilities. The Parks and Natural Resources Team includes experienced turf professionals dedicated to providing the highest quality municipal athletic fields resulting in a quality sports experience for players of all ages. This team utilizes the latest methodology and equipment to manage 33 acres of Tifway 419 Bermuda Grass that will meet the high use demands of City sports programs.

Their work also includes maintaining 146,000 square feet of baseball/softball field infields and warming tracks.

Natural Resources Management

The Parks and Natural Resources Team is also responsible for managing 84 acres of City owned natural areas. The Parks and Natural Resources Supervisor leads an effort that monitors their health and vitality and develops plans for protection, maintenance, and enhancement to ensure that these areas will endure for many years to come. A critical component to this effort is the recent completion of a series of natural area assessments. This comprehensive analysis studied soil and hydrological conditions, vegetation, and wildlife at key sites throughout the City. Solutions to current management challenges as well as suggestions for future enhancements were also provided. The results will be used to formulate long-term management strategies for these areas.

Community Transportation

The Public Works division, in conjunction with Broward County Transit, operates a free community bus service with two routes designed to provide safe and convenient transportation to areas of interest within the City limits and key sites outside its borders. The Community Transportation Team is dedicated to serving its customers and maintaining a sustainable transportation alternative for residents of Coconut Creek. For more information on the Community Buses, including route maps and schedules, CLICK HERE.

Fleet Services

Fleet Services is responsible for maintaining the City’s fleet of vehicles and equipment, including but not limited to, utility vehicles, buses, light and medium trucks, police cars, and turf maintenance equipment. The goal of Fleet Services is to increase vehicle and equipment life and reduce costly repairs through preventative maintenance on 527 pieces of moving stock and equipment.

The City is also committed to the use of alternative fuels such as Biodiesel, and utilizes hybird vehicles to help reduce dependency on foreign oil. In addition, maintenance programs are constantly reviewed to ensure that proper environmental safeguards are in place and the latest technologies are utilized to further the City's "Green" culture.

This is accomplished through a competitive contract with First Vehicle Services, Inc., a private fleet maintenance organization.
